Chambres d'Hotes, Chalet & Camping à la ferme
Welcome
The Moulin du Pommier, Charente at the border of the Haute Vienne, Our Bed & Breakfast or as the French say Chambre d’Hôtes, Chalet and Camping Rural lies at 8 hectares (20 acres) of hilly fields and forest with two small constantly flowing streams passing thru the property. In one of the rivers is a waterfall. Le Moulin du Pommier is about 2 km away (1.3 miles) from the small village Saulgond, on the road D51 to Confolens. Saulgond has only 35 inhabitants but has a post office annex bread depot and even a small city hall with a Mayor, who is also a farmer.
Le Moulin du Pommier (The Mill of Pommier) is registered as far back as 1840 when it was built as a watermill for milling wheat and grain and it was in operation for almost 100 years. The property was passed through 5 generations of the family Dugorge until we; Gary and Emmy Loessberg purchased it 14 April 2002.
During the 1950s the mill was dismantled and the home was renovated with electricity, water and the conveniences of the day. It was converted into a sheep farm; later even a fish farm was installed fed with water running from the larger of the two rivers. In 2004 we closed the fish farm and summer 2005 the fishery was converted in a lovely green area with a swimming pool.
All year around you will see horses grazing in the fields
There is a hiking trail (one of the many!) that passes through the property and people can regularly be seen passing by about 150m from the main house. You can use this trail to walk to Saulgond for fresh French bread. The main river is open to the public and occasionally fisherman can be seen, especially in the spring and summer.
In fall 2008 Gary restored the old mill étang and we hope to be able to have it filled and stocked with fish in the Summer 2009.
In 2009 it will also be possible to visit us with your own horse if you are making a trail ride. We have a separate field away from our horses.
The adventures ones among us on motorbikes are also welcome. You can park your motor in the carport.
The Charente is a beautiful hilly area with lots of rivers, lakes and étangs (small lakes). For the active ones among you there are many hiking trials available. Also for the bikers there are plenty of routes to take. You will find Castles and Roman art, folklore festival of Confolens and many others …
We would be happy to have you as a guest en route or for a longer period.
